The purpose of this three-day course is to take a deep dive into the relationship of external regulatory expectations and standards of practice from the operational lens of the clinical leader. Key roles, such as the director of nursing (DON), assistant DON, unit/nurse manager, quality improvement nurse, and the like are very complex and provide administrative leadership on many levels including but not limited to: staffing and employee development, provisions of care, regulatory compliance, and establishing and maintaining standards of practice. During this course we will take an in-depth look at external regulations, survey management and compliance strategies, internal and external oversight, clinical communication, and how to leverage the RAI process in promoting regulatory compliance, financial stewardship, and most importantly resident care. Attendees will be provided a State Operations Manual (SOM) and Minimum Data Set (MDS) Item Set, along with a host of other regulatory references and course materials.

In addition, the Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) will talk about the self-reporting process to include Iowa specific (State) and Federal requirements, internal investigation tips and best practices for submitting documentation through DIA’s online self-reporting portal, timing for DIA investigations, and additional tips and information about achieving past non-compliance when an incident occurs. DIA will also discuss the self-identification and correction form that is available to Iowa providers at survey time.
