LeadingAge Iowa is pleased to announce a virtual series that will take place in three segments over the first half of 2023 that will aid in developing the Director of Nursing (DON) role in nursing homes. Elements of this series will focus on budgeting and quality assurance; survey processes and regulations; and human resources, customer service, and leadership.

Each segment of this series is designed to provide in-depth information and discussion on each topic without taking the series in a sequential order or taking all 3 sections of the series. By making each of the 3 segments standalone, you can better address succession planning by having individuals attend as their nurse leadership skills are identified. Additional sections in this series will be added to the events calendar in June.

Event Agenda
March 29, 2023
1 – 2:15 p.m. CT

Introduction to the Survey Process
Vicki Worth, RN, BSBA, LTC Bureau Chief, Department of Inspections and Appeals, Des Moines

The long-term care survey process can be very time-consuming and stressful for the Director of Nursing while the surveyors are on-site. This session will provide an overview of what to expect during the on-site survey, in an effort to prepare both mentally and physically.

  • Identify key tasks that surveyors will complete during the on-site recertification survey.
  • Understand the process for completing the CMS-802 and CMS-672 forms.
  • Develop strategies for effective interview skills with long-term care surveyors.

2:30 – 4:15 p.m. CT
MDS Overview, Regulations & Resident Centered Care Planning
Kellie Van Ree, RN, LNHA, IP, Director of Clinical Services, LeadingAge Iowa, Urbandale

A key component of reimbursement, quality measures, and performance indicators is the Minimum Data Set (MDS). The Director of Nursing must have a basic understanding of the MDS process for quality assurance, performance improvement, and to be available as a resource to the MDS Coordinator.

  • Differentiate between each MDS Item Set/Section including assessment reference periods.
  • Identify where to locate information in the RAI manual as a reference to completing the MDS.
  • Develop resident-centered care plans based on the MDS coding.
