Leveraging Technology During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated application of technology into senior living and health care through the introduction of regulatory waivers to support telehealth and by necessity to combat social isolation. This session will highlight the creative applications of technology during the pandemic and how it will continue to impact the future. Additionally, learn how emerging technologies and the novel use of existing ones have enhanced productivity, engaged residents and clients, and reduced isolation. 

  • Explain how technology has enabled communities to creatively meet a variety of needs during the pandemic and how it will continue to impact the future.
  • Discuss emerging technologies and novel uses of existing ones, including telehealth, that enhance productivity, engage residents and clients, and reduce isolation.

Dr. Majd Alwan, PhD, SVP of Technology and Business Strategy, LeadingAge, Executive Director, LeadingAge CAST, Washington, DC
Majd Alwan, PhD, a noted researcher and authority on aging-services technologies, is LeadingAge’s senior vice president of technology, and executive director of the LeadingAge Center for Aging Services Technologies (CAST). Dr. Alwan is responsible for creating and leading a network of technology companies, providers, and research institutions focused on technology solutions for an aging society. The network advances the interests of older consumers, caregivers, and providers and fosters opportunities for collaboration between provider organizations, technology companies, and research institutions in exploring product development, testing prototypes, evaluating technology, and deploying technology-enabled care models. Prior to joining CAST, Dr. Alwan served as an assistant professor and the director of the Robotics and Eldercare Technologies Program at the University of Virginia's Medical Automation Research Center. His research interests there included passive functional and health assessment, biomedical instrumentation, medical automation, as well as eldercare and assistive technologies.

Scott Code, Associate Director, LeadingAge Center for Aging Services Technology (CAST), Washington, DC
Scott Code assists with shaping and executing LeadingAge CAST’s strategies and work plans to expand and lead CAST’s network. He is responsible for increasing CAST’s exposure and coordinating technology initiatives that aim to identify barriers and opportunities to facilitate the use of technology in an aging society, including coordinating state-level activities in partnership with LeadingAge’s State Affiliates. Prior to joining LeadingAge CAST, Code spent seven years at SelfHelp Community Services in NY. He has become an expert in leveraging technology to help older adults stay independent and socially engaged. Code has master's degrees in gerontology and business, providing him with the ability to both evaluate and implement new technology across the care continuum. His most recognized program, SelfHelp's Virtual Senior Center founded in partnership with Microsoft and New York City, provided unique programs for New York City's senior citizens and garnered both national and international attention.
